A Day in Dublin
I made it! Landed in Dublin this morning after a sleepless, mostly uncomfortable flight—the highlight of which was a lady at customs who got a kick out of my name. She asked for the backstory, but then she stamped my passport and moved on. *So* maybe another time.
I've pretty much forgotten about my flight at this point, because so much has happened in the last 36 hours that I feel like I've lived three lives. My family friend Finbarr picked me up at the airport, and since then, life has been a sleepless whirlwind of traditional Irish dancing, job shadowing, and "touristy shit," as he would say.
I loved every minute.
After finding an ATM and watching Finbarr shoot for a local paper, one of the first places we passed was the Department of the Taoiseach. We were lucky, because the gates are normally closed, but a car came through as we were walking by, so we had an unobstructed view for a few minutes.
I loved walking along the River Liffey, which flows through the center of Dublin and is crossed by several beautiful bridges.
I didn't have time to go inside Trinity College and see the Book of Kells (saving that for Monday, when I'm back in the city), but we walked the grounds and got an idea of what I should budget time for next week. After spending the day in the city centre, Finbarr drove us back to his home in County Carlow, where he and his family are graciously hosting me for the next few days.
This is the National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology, and it was even more stunning than it looks in a photograph, if that's possible. I'm going to post more videos to my Instagram story if you're interested in seeing some different angles and exhibits.
I could go on for hours but I'm not sure I've ever been this tired, so I'll leave things here. Tomorrow, Finbarr is taking his two boys and me hiking in the countryside, so I'm sure I'll have lots more to share then.
Xx,
Ireland
